Maximising the Space in Your Storage Unit

It’s a simple fact in business – renting space costs money. Whether you’ve got an office filled with staff and paperwork or you’re an online business that has orders to fulfil. We all need the room to do our jobs properly.
But what happens when the space runs out? Moving somewhere bigger comes at a price and may not always be necessary. Sometimes it’s better to address your space and understand how to use it wisely. So, you may be sitting there looking at a pile of boxes stacked high thinking it can’t be done. Trust us, it can. In this blog, we look at how it’s possible to work some magic and maximise your storage.
Taking storage to new heights
When investing in some racking or shelving, it’s an obvious step to buy something that fills the width of your space. But does your storage equipment offer you the flexibility to maximise the height of your space?
For example, we have a range of solutions available in varying heights that can help you to fill every inch. Our Longspan shelving starts at 1800mm high going all the way up to 2438mm in height with our Stockrax shelving. If that doesn’t fill your boots, you could always consider one of our racking systems like our Apex pallet racking which is available in heights of up to 6000mm!
Once you’ve maxed out the height, think how you will utilise the extra height. Work out which items you need to frequently access and which you don’t. Then anything you don’t need regularly, place onto the higher shelves. For stock that is always on the move, keep it near the front at an easily accessible height. It will help speed up picking times.
Make storage adaptable
Running an SME efficiently and profitably requires flexibility. Are you able to accommodate changing stock patterns? Can you adapt quickly to store an excess of items? What if the size and weight of your products or containers change suddenly? All these scenarios can happen. If your shelving has been designed with fixed parameters, it could restrict you.
Adaptability is key here! The best way to achieve this is by keeping your options open, literally. If demand increases for certain products, you need storage that can grow. Go with something like our Euro open bay shelving or Apex starter kits (suitable for heavy-duty storage) and you can extend whenever you’re ready.
Of course, as stock patterns change, you may need to adapt how you use the space, which leads nicely to…accessories.
Efficient storage
To achieve a smooth-running business, you’ll need a bit of organisation. Categorise and store items (whether by size, colour products) and it will make everything quicker and easier to locate. That means organising your shelves by dividing the space into different stock profiles! Oh, and they’re also pretty good for utilising the entire shelf – filling the depth, width and height.
We have a whole range of modular accessories that work across our shelving and racking systems to help you maximise your efficiency and productivity. Go for something like our LinBins and you can choose from a range of sizes. We’re sure you’ll find something to suit your stock. Even better our LinBins stack on top of each other (perfect for filling the height of your shelf) and have a wide mouth opening to make retrieving items fuss-free.
If you’ve opted for a closed shelf system, why not segment the shelves. You can choose full-height dividers combined with bin fronts to create larger picking containers. Or go with a half-height option and use it to store paperwork or smaller boxes.
